Since the manufacturer says that his phone under Android can resist water, dust and shock we put it to the test in our Motorola Defy test. And we have not spared him. On the advertising poster of the smartphone Motorola Defy the operating device is shown with raindrops on the screen, seemingly out of pool stormed by a group of young people hilarious.

The message is clear: the Defy the challenge of a life of smartphone passed into the hands of persons who are active, rather young. Who like to communicate, maintain as much their real social networks virtual. Users looking for a phone touch both on the page, customizable with a consequent applications, namely here Android Market store, and both resistant to potential falls, on the ground or in water.
Motorola Defy, taken in hand, gives the impression of being compact. Despite a screen diagonal “3.7 all the same. Its approximately 13 mm thickness is reasonable.
On three sides, seven screw give him a small submersible air. End to ensure the leakproofness of the apparatus, catch jack and micro USB entries are closed by plastic caches. On the lid, slightly curved outwards, he trust and plate is firmly under the action of a sliding stop on a kind of Groove rubber surrounding the battery compartment.
Theoretically, neither water nor dust should pass. As much as the constructor as “the cache of the battery was lubricated to facilitate sealing”.
Motorola Defy watertight: crash test
Motorola certifies that its Defy obeys standard IP67. Therefore, by definition, the first indication of protection (6) means that the device completely resists dust. And the second index (7) that it can confront immersion total in water at a depth up to 1 m and this for half an hour. We’re not made to us pray. After the software tests, we first spent Motorola Defy under intense jet of a tap. The apparatus, lit, continued to operate safely, apparently.
Then, instead of immersion to 1 m, we have wisely plunged the Defy into a glass of water. For about six minutes. Out there, its operation was maintained. Not bad?
Was it increase the severity of the test, plunging the longer and more deeply? Certainly not. Because, by opening the back cover, we noted that the water is was infiltrated, although in small quantities, but still, to contact the battery and the SIM card, placed below. And yet different caches were (of course) closed. We have taken care to clean the Interior. Later, the mist has appeared on the glass of the objective and the upper corner of the screen.
How to conclude this test? On the one hand, we know that few phones have borne an immersion (even in a glass of water) of a one or two minutes. On the other, on the document received from Motorola extolling of the Defy, it is issue to IP67. Our test cannot guarantee this promise.
Note that the tested device was new. Was defective? In any case, it might be preferable that Motorola says in its user manual endurable limits its Defy, what we have seen anywhere.
Bonus screen
Such as the Dell Streak, Motorola Defy screen is glass Gorilla (from the Corning company). What to give very high strength (not only water and dust but also) scratch and shock. We are not far away, this time to confirm this. We happily ridden the tips of scissors on the screen. And despite the pressure, the glass does not struck in this test. Only a pre-existing stripe test appeared, and another, very slight: we do not know the origins.
To estimate its resistance to shocks, we launched several times the phone on relatively soft surfaces. No damage was found. Then, we have drop from a height of approximately 1.3 m on a table made of a kind of wicker. Here too, nothing to report abnormal. A fall (on back) more of 1.1 m on a tile has not shown nor signs of dysfunction. In fact, shortly after, since the start, after the shock button, showed a bit of game.
We have fears, with the low penetration of water, that the device would suffer from court-circuits the following hours. But it nothing was the next day. Apparently, the Defy will tolerate at least brief passages in the water.
Good sounds
Otherwise, to hand his physical resistance, the Defy is different not particularly to other smartphones of the mark. As its predecessors under Android, it aggregates and manages user’s social networks through its MotoBlur interface.
The AFN, equipped with flash, issues of average quality 5 megapixel photos. They lack contrast. They are take the comparison with the iPhone 4 also sensor-equipped with the same number of pixels. By contrast display (other good images) on its screen (capacitive LCD of 3.7 inches, displaying a resolution of 480 x 854 pixels) is convincing: the blows, the contrast is well. Playback of certain video files however resulted in bugs.
We much appreciated the audio quality of the mp3 player. Lovers of deep (and dynamic) will go in the same direction. However, they will perhaps disappointed by taking jack: tested phone, two helmets sheet does not down to the end.
When browsing, we found it fluid and the famous finger zoom (multi-touch) is very fast. Pity that the automatic adjustment of the width of the text to the screen is not always effective. The notable exception of Flash reading accepted by the Defy (via Flash Lite 3, Flash 10.1 being reserved for Android 2.2), we note once again (well yes!) navigation and reading Web pages, if they are pleasantstill did not match those of the iPhone.
Accuracy: the version of Android is the 2.1. Damage. Motorola wanted book 2.2 (Froyo) at the top of range Milestone 2. But overall, the Defy is well equipped and quite enjoyable to use. Small bonus: it has a FM RDS of good radio. It cannot help thinking that the Defy is young. But they should not be the only ones to benefit. Because, with the development of widescreen, who wouldn’t want a pleasant and robust touch phone?
More : Relative resistance to water, robustness of the screen (Gorilla), audio quality (mp3 player and FM RDS radio), the screen, fluidity of navigation Web, Flash Lite 3.
Less : Compliance not convincing IP67, bugs during video playback, incomplete introduction of taking jack, android 2.1 (only).
